Romans 12:3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.
God has blessed me with numerous opportunities to watch history in the making, by which I mean to watch him write his story. I have had the privilege of studying and watching the Church in China since 1980–including having met and heard both Hwa Yung and James Taylor IV. And candidly right now, I sit here reading this article envious of their roles and opportunities to participate first hand in this part of God’s story. And yet, this is exactly my calling–to watch and to pray for our brothers and sisters in China and other parts of the world, as they come to faith in our Lord Jesus and as they “become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 4:13).
Henry Venn (1796-1873), John L. Nevius (1829-93), and Roland Allen (1868-1947) are among the cloud of witnesses who have called for the Church in China to rise up and for the Church in the West to step back in support of the Church in China. The Forum demonstrates that their prayers, and the prayers of many saints, are being answered in our generation. Those who gathered in Seoul did so because they were barred from attending the Lausanne Congress in Capetown, South Africa. Yet, they would not be denied. They sought an opportunity from the Lord to add their voice to calling the Church Global to a renewed vision of bringing the Gospel to all nations from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth.
And so it is my privilege to watch in awe, to continue to pray, and in all of this, to give glory and praise to our God, who loved the world so much, that he sent his one and only Son, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, so that whoever believes in him would not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). Furthermore, it is my privilege to see that God, by the power of his Holy Spirit is laying the foundations of the Heavenly Jerusalem, when the nations and the kings of the nations will bring the glory of their own nations into that City of God and bow before the Lord (Rev 21).
